The Abyss

Deep Sea

Below a thousand metres the sun gives up. What remains is pressure, cold, and a darkness so complete that the eye invents shapes to fill it. The Abyss is the archive's record of that place — not the sea you swim in, but the sea that has never been warm.

Sound behaves strangely here. Low frequencies carry for miles while everything bright is swallowed, so the music of the deep is almost entirely bass and reverberation: the groan of water moving against itself, the long answer of a sonar pulse, and, rarely, a cold flicker of light made by something alive.

Play these transmissions loud and low. The Abyss is meant to be felt in the chest before it is heard in the ear — the way weight is felt by anything that sinks far enough.

Field notes

On pressure

At depth, every sound is bent by the weight of the water above it. We imitate this with heavy low-pass filtering: the brightness is not removed for style but because, down here, brightness simply cannot survive. What reaches you is what would still be moving after a mile of ocean.

On sonar

A sonar pulse is a question asked into the dark, and the delay before its echo is the only measure of distance the deep allows. The lone ping in Mariana is tuned to answer itself a beat late — the sound of a machine listening for a wall that may not be there.
